Floating Shelves

We’ve been settling into our new apartment for the past month or so and we’re finally wrapping things up! This wall only had the one big picture and looked a little empty so I figured I could add a little pizzaz to our set up.

I got these floating shelves at Target and I absolutely love them. I was concerned about hanging anything too heavy so these were the perfect solution. I’ve been quite the handy-woman lately, assembling end tables, lamps, and china cabinets (all to come) so this was just one of many hammer & nail projects.

I mentioned in my Mr & Mrs post about how Young House Love suggests hanging pictures but I found a different way that works a little better for me. Painters tape!

I assembled everything on the floor and measured out the middle of the couch then put a line of tape down the middle to measure from there. I hung the temple picture then put the strips of tape where the floatings shelves were supposed to go.

The great thing about using painters tape is that once you put in your nails or screws you can leave the tape there and you won’t see it! So sneaky!

I’m not totally convinced about the picture arrangements I have on the shelves but I had other things to do with my life so I decided to leave it like this…and maybe I’ll get some inspiration later ๐Ÿ™‚

Mud Smoothie

It just looks like mud…blueberry flavored mud, doesn’t it?

photo 2 (7)

While it may look a little weird it’s actually really delicious! The combination of blueberries and banana is super interesting and I ended up loving it.

photo 1 (7)

Obviously you can add or take out whatever you want for this smoothie – totally up to you – but here is the recipe I made the other morning. If you end up making it and changing something let me know so I can try it too!

MUD SMOOTHIE

1 handful fresh spinach

1/2 c blueberries

1 banana

4 oz vanilla yogurt

1 c milk

Blend it up for 30 seconds and there you have it, your very own mud smoothie ๐Ÿ™‚ You could always add protein powder or chia seeds for an extra kick. Enjoy!

Glass Jars

We decided to move to our current apartment about five months ago and right around then I found these glass jars. And fell in love. I had to have them! However, we were going to move and what’s the point when that would just add one more thing to our moving list? So I waited patiently (and mentioned it every time we went shopping) until the day that I could actually buy these amazing jars!

photo 3 (2)

Aren’t they beautiful? Okay, so yeah I really love my jars. All the jars like this I saw on Pinterest were for flour, sugar, and brown sugar. Makes sense if you love baking, those ingredients come in handy all the time.

That was my original plan but of course before I even got the jars I signed up to run a half marathon with my cousin and went all healthy. Hence the quinoa & oats ๐Ÿ™‚ I still bake, don’t get me wrong, just not as much!

The tricky part was figuring out how in the world to put the words on! I tried using “clear” sticky paper I got at Staples but their version of clear wasn’t the invisible-clear I was going for. I talked to my Mom about ideas and she suggested I “get a vinyl lady”. Apparently she has one so I “got one” too!

My Bishop’s wife gave us this beautiful tile for our wedding with our names on it in vinyl so I asked her for a favor and there you have it! Having a vinyl lady sure pays off!

Game Night Date Night

I like basketball and Mr. Layland likes baseball. We both think the other sport is a waste of time but love and marriage is about sacrifice, right? We’ve been lucky enough in the past few months to make it to both games and quite enjoyed ourselves!

Cardinals VS Diamondbacks

There are two great things about going to games as a couple.

1 – You suddenly learn that your husband knows A TON about baseball. You never knew it but he’s the walking-talking version of Baseball for Dummies that you’ve always needed! Next thing you know, you actually understand the game of baseball ๐Ÿ™‚

2 – The food. That goes for pretty much any sporting event. Basketball? Food. Baseball? Food. Hockey? Food. Sports are a beautiful thing.

Sadly, it was this very tray of nachos that distracted me from seeing Jabari Parker tear his ACL and get carried off the court. Missed the whole thing. I saw him fall down and next thing I know he’s already off the court and the player I THINK is Jabari Parker is walking away and I’m thinking “Oh good, he’s fine!” Little did I know that one minute I looked down would mean no more games for Jabari Parker. Ooops!

We had a blast at both games and got the chance to share our sports passions with each other. It’s always fun to add a little competition into a date night, even if it is just about which team you’re cheering for! Who does’t love screaming at the top of their lungs for a few hours?! Oh & don’t forget to document the great time you had together โค

Love You

I went through a phase of doing just about everything you can to invent something with a frame andย here’s one of them! I actually really love it and thought it turned out great.

Mr. Layland loves games so this idea with the Scrabble letters had a certain personal meaningfulness to it too.

photo 2 (3)

I sealed the frame to the paper inside with super glue then secured the Scrabble letters in place. The red heart is made out of felt – it took me a while to get the right size. Once everything is in place and dry I filled the frame with resin.

It made certain parts of the Scrabble letters darker in some spots…not sure why but other than that the end result was perfect! It’s like glass formed around the letters which is pretty awesome. It took several hours to dry but it was worth it! I love this decoration because it’s super cute without being too mushy ๐Ÿ™‚ย Who doesn’t love that?!

With Valentine’s Day coming up in a few weeks this might be a little DIY project to consider customizing for your loved one!

Spinach Burgers

Just trust me. While this meal has spinach as the main ingredient, it’s surprisingly delicious! I’ve put my fair share of spinach into smoothies and know you can’t really taste a huge difference but I was still a little skeptical about making these burgers. Let me just say, this recipe made 5 burgers — and we ate them all!

photo 2 (2)

I found the recipe on this blog but I made a few changes. When I got it all mixed together it didn’t seem moist enough. Mr. Layland suggested we add another egg, so we did! Adding the egg was perfect and the patties held together really well in the pan.

photo 1 (2)

I blended the spinach in my Ninja and hand mixed in the other ingredients. I’m sure I could have just thrown it all together in the food processor…but I didn’t. Next time! I’ll definitely be making these again ๐Ÿ™‚

SPINACH BURGERS

1 bag fresh spinach, blended

2 egg whites

2 whole eggs

1/4 c diced onion

1/2 c shredded cheese

1/2 c Italian seasoned bread crumbs

1 tsp red pepper flakes

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp garlic powder

Blend spinach until shredded. ย Add other ingredients and stir to combine. Shape into patties and cook on the stove over medium high heat (about 5 minutes each side) until firm and golden. Enjoy!!!

Appleberry Smoothie

This delicious organic juice is actually all thanks to Mr. Layland!

photo 2 (1)

I know, I’m a lucky girl ๐Ÿ™‚ Ever since we got our Ninja at Christmas we’ve been going smoothie crazy! I usually put yogurt and milk in mine…but I have to say I’m still a huge fan of this juice blend Mr. Layland invented.

APPLEBERRY SMOOTHIE

1 cup organic unsweetened apple juice

1 cup blueberries

1 cup raspberries

2 apples, quartered

Put all the contents into the blender and whip it up! Keep in mind this is just a juice and therefore won’t make for a substantial meal. I would suggest substituting it for your typical orange juice at breakfast!
